Puppeteers Cooperative
Sorry, registration now closed.
The show will go on!!
We are working out a plan to have this workshop take place “virtually”.
WHAT: Make giant puppet characters from materials found in and around your home, per instructions and online guidance from members of the Puppeteers Cooperative of Boston. Learn your character’s lines and actions. Upload photos or video clips to our online workshop space. We’ll stitch the submissions together into an online presentation.
WHEN: The week of April 13-17. (Or sooner really because we’ll be sending stuff out the week before)
HOW: Register for the workshop. We will send you instructions for making puppets and costumes, the suggested role, lines, and “business” for your character, directions for joining our Google Hangouts or Zoom Rooms with the Puppeteers Cooperative and the community of fellow workshop participants, and instructions and specifications for uploading video, audio, or photos.
WHO: Anyone, Any Age, Anywhere can participate — puppeteers, office workers, poets, kids, musicians, grandparents, whole families together (even your cousin in Seattle or your boyfriend in Toronto) — anyone at home with a computer, Internet connection, and camera (phone or tablet) during COVID-19!
The Puppeteers Cooperative operates a workshop and library in the basement of the venerable Emmanuel Church on Newbury Street in Boston. Sara Peattie, who facilitated the 2019 live workshops in Fairlee Town Hall Auditorium, will be be the virtual coach along with a colleague from the Puppeteers.
Megan Helm and members of the Adventure Kids Choir will be part of the fun.
The Vermont Community Foundation is supporting this program with a grant, so participation is FREE and the creative artists involved won’t lose income from this gig.
How to participate:
Register for the workshop! This will give us an email mail list that we can use to send out puppet plans, links, places to upload the video clips etc.
The workshop will go on!
Sara Peattie of Boston’s Puppeteers Cooperative brings her special magic to a weeklong workshop culminating in a Pageant with the theme: “Waking Up the Earth” onstage at Fairlee Town Hall Theater on Friday evening. Sara will be assisted by Ed Williams, Executive Director of Creating-It-Through Productions, a theater arts training program based in Boston.
Create masks, giant puppets and wearable creatures from simple everyday materials at daily afternoon sessions (3-5pm), and use them in a performance Friday evening at 6pm. Each person will create a personal mask or puppet and assist in constructing several larger than life-sized puppets.
Sara Peattie began her career in theater and giant puppet-making with the Bread and Puppet Theater, now of Glover, VT. Soon she formed her own company and for over 30 years Puppeteers Cooperative and Lending Library has been based in the basement of Emmanuel Church on Newbury St. in Boston, Mass.
Sara Peattie has led workshops, pageants and parades all over the US. She leads a two-week workshop for the Governor’s Council for the Arts in Castleton, VT every summer, culminating in a parade on the fourth of July. Her section of Boston’s First Night parade: puppets, banners and giant brightly colored, illuminated creatures is always a notable feature.
