Heliand Consort photoHeliand Consort explores the complex triangle that brought together three of the greatest musical minds of the Romantic Era. Through letters and music of Brahms and the Schumanns, Heliand offers a glimpse into their tragic and beautiful story of love, friendship and art. The program includes Robert Schumann’s “Romances for Oboe and Piano,” Brahms “Sonata for Piano and Clarinet,” and songs by Clara Schumann.

The program will feature musicians Katie Oprea on oboe, Cynthia Huard on piano, and Elisabeth LeBlanc on clarinet. Selected letters will be read by Pat Evans, tuba player and retired band director.

Heliand Consort is a dynamic ensemble of virtuoso musicians who perform engaging classical music with an infusion of 20th century and contemporary repertoire. The core ensemble—flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and piano—varies according to programming needs. Currently celebrating iteleventh season, Heliand is recognized for its inspired programs, musical vitality, and commitment to bringing classical music to new audiences through ongoing partnerships with schools and community organizations.

What’s in a name? ‘Heliand’ is Old Saxon for healing power; helianthus is a sunflower. The group recognizes the power of music to bring joy to many lives. It is a flexible consortium, open to collaborations and new ideas, and is keen to welcome new audiences to classical music.
